Even though I am not a teacher yet, I do love teaching; that’s why I always try to prepare myself to give the best of me because I Know how important is to receive an education of excellence in the earlier ages. By reviewing the parameters, I think my punctuation should be 5. The aspects that I consider most problematic are the following:

A curriculum that is comparable to the material covered in the English-only classroom.

As a Paraeducator I don’t work with a curriculum, I support my student’s needs based on the teachers’ directions and throughout my own observation.

2. Instruction through the native language for subject matter.

Mostly of the ELLs’ who I work with speak Spanish and Haitian Creole. My native language is Spanish and even when I’ve been trying to learn some Creole, I must recognize that I am not even close to address their academic deficiencies in their native language.

Administrative and instructional staff and community support for the program.

I know that this is not everybody’s situation but in my particular case I must say that sometimes the school administration and instructional staff are not aware of why is so important to provide a quality service for ELLs. For example, due to the deficit of professional personnel, paraeducators are usually covering other positions and furthermore ELLs don’t receive the support they need.

Appropriately trained personnel.

As I mentioned before paraeducators are considered a non-instructional position, this is the reason why the Department of Education don’t provide the resources needed to develop a better job. There isn’t any professional developmental program that focuses on training paraeducators, which is also related to the next aspect:

Adequate resources and linguistically, culturally, and developmentally appropriate materials.

The school doesn’t provide any financial aid to buy materials and other resources to work with ELLs students and better assist their needs. The ESOL Department from the District has provided some supplies, but it’s not enough.

This is a reality that I really hope doesn’t affect the majority of the schools but without any doubt it does affect me both, personally and professionally, and of course also affects in a more profound and negative way ELLs students.

When students with another native language are still beginning to learn English, it is recommended that regular classes such as math, English, history, and science be taught in their native language. This is so that students can understand the material and do not fall behind with the material in these classes while learning English. It is also said that taking classes in their mother tongue helps them develop some language skills that make it easier to learn new languages. Children who are bilingual do better tasks that require creativity, pattern recognition, and problem solving. Studies have also shown that these students have a very good memory.

Bilingual programs also have effects in the social area. When children are exposed to more than one language, children appreciate the cultural differences of others much more. By knowing more than one languages they are better able to relate to others through different means without requiring the intervention of others and making meaningful connections.

While there are many positive effects as a result of the bilingual program, there are also some negative effects. Due to the fact that these children are offered in part in their mother tongue and are sometimes removed from their regular classroom to be grouped with other children of the same level of English to teach them English, these children are not exposed to English as much. like other children who are in other ELL programs or the regular program. This can make the process of learning the new language take much longer, which can affect them academically. Another negative aspect is ensuring that the new standards are implemented with quality assessment, appropriate teacher training, the curriculum, and how the material is developed for these children.

Teachers can help schools overcome these problems in a number of ways. One of the strategies that teachers can adopt that can help make the bilingual program effective is to have teachers who are qualified, who are bilingual, and who have the skills and certifications to teach all regular classes. They must also be willing to prepare the necessary materials for the instructions and communicate with the students in their mother tongue but in an academic language.
