Interpersonal Communication: Body Language and Non-verbal Communication

To many people, body language usually relates to physical movements, visual cues, and posture. Nevertheless, among the most essential and quick aspects of nonverbal communication are communicated through facial expressions. An individual’s face reflects various contexts of emotions, which might vary from absolute pleasure to shimmering indignation shown in a moment of expression; the furrowed eyebrows, the jaw clenching and the narrowing or grimacing of eyes develop varying facial expressions that convey certain feelings without the need of verbal communication. The film clip from Malcolm and Marie is an excellent display of these expressions during an argument and how they reflect different behaviors and attitudes as well as perceptions regarding an individual.

Communication an important aspect of every interaction, and thus, in this film clip, the two characters Malcolm and Marie engage in this context. From a non-verbal context, the two characters are engaged in a heated conversation. According to De Vito (2015), in non-verbal communication various signs are portrayed and thus enable the communication of certain messages (119). Therefore, when observing the two characters various signs are evident that projects certain messages as communicated non-verbally. As Malcolm converses with Marie, his facial expressions, gestures and body language present anger (0:01). As the two engage in a heated argument, their body language and other non-verbal communication cues generate the idea of a relationship where both hold dominance over the other. The body movements communicate their feelings and attitude towards the issue at hand, as Malcolm is evidently angry, and presents a domineering behavior, Marie develops the controlling behavior.

The application of non-verbal communication in this clip is geared towards the enhancement of its emphasis. Arguments occur when two people are in disagreement and thus, as the events ensue between the two; their behavior develops various perceptions into the nature of their relationship. The anger that Malcolm displays generates tension through affect displays, which are evident from his facial expressions and hand movements. According to De Vito (2015), regulators are forms of non-verbal communication that establish a sense of control over the other person and Marie’s body language is evident of this context. This behavior is developed when Malcolm speaks and seems to do so, in a high pitched tone, while Marie displays her displeasure when she moves her hands over her hair and frowns as she turns her head to make direct contact with him (0:04). She instantly makes Malcolm to lower his tone but does not control his domineering nature. As he talks to her, Malcolm makes direct eye contact and chews his food aggressively. The behavior that both characters develop in their argument is harnessed towards elevating and alleviating the tension the anger creates.

Malcolm communicates a sense of dominance, not only in the manner in which he sits and addresses Marie, but also in his physical appearance. When he stands up to face Marie, his physical appearance, both strong and masculine asserts his domineering presence, especially with regards to their relationship (0:51). On the other hand, Marie establishes body language cues that generate aspects of control in the argument. She is able to tone down Malcolm’s outburst and fury through facial communication, which portrays her emotions of disappointment. Facial communication as noted by De Vito (2015) communicates an individual’s emotions and feelings (122). Malcolm’s anger and outburst in their argument is met with the calm, yet disappointed nature of Marie. Although evidently hurt, she manages to maintain direct eye contact with Malcolm, reflecting her interest and willingness to listen and understand his perspective. The reassured look and expression that Marie develops from her body language adequately brings the tension down, and Malcolm moves towards her and holds her lovingly (2:28). The Non-verbal communication presented in the clip helps in establishing the moments of the arguments and how the behaviors of the two characters elevate and ease this tension.
