San Diego State University Food Desert Speech Essay

Question Description

INTRO – Hi everyone today I will be discussing food deserts and how they disproportionately affect our low income communities.

Vehicle/Attention Getting Device: Many people aren’t familiar with what food deserts are…it’s when it’s difficult to buy affordable or just good quality fresh healthy food in certain urban areas.

Brief Background of Importance: It’s important to look into food deserts because it affects many families in low income communities because they aren’t getting much access to nutritional food. Which leads to more fast food eating and just consuming unhealthy foods in general.

Impact: Living in food deserts can lead to many side effects especially in kids. Not having access to healthy foods leads to obesity in low-income families and especially children. Also as stated in Medical News Today, “Without access to healthful foods, people living in food deserts may be at higher risk of diet-related conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.”

Thesis/Preview: So now that you have a brief idea of what food desert is and the effects of it I will now continue explaining the problem of food deserts, the causes and finally some solutions we can do to help low-income areas that are in a food desert.
