According to Walston (2018), it is important for healthcare leaders to study and comprehend strategic planning and management in order to steer their organizations to the right course for the future. Moreover, implementing sound strategies will lead to better outcomes and results for the organization. Strategic planning and decision making for healthcare organizations are impacted by a multitude of factors and it is in the best interest of the organization to institute a more proactive rather than a reactive approach to mitigate possible substantial losses or hardships for the organization.

According to Walston (2018), political forces is one of the factors that influence strategic planning. For instance, the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 introduced a gargantuan shift for the healthcare industry. However, with recent ruling of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals invalidating the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) necessitated swift and immediate reaction from healthcare leaders (OBrien, 2019). With the courts decision that the individual mandate is unconstitutional, other stipulations and provisions of the law are in jeopardy as well. This alerts healthcare leaders to re-examine business processes to prepare for the unfortunate possibility of the laws dissolution. This will impact not only the accessibility and availability of healthcare services to millions of Americans, but as important, the provision of services by organizations. This is more dire for for-profit organizations which may lose significant reimbursement when more individuals are deprived of healthcare coverage.

A proactive strategy for healthcare organizations may include contracting to more health insurance providers to increase diversity of payors. This can be a significant shift from Medicare and Medicaid insurance which can be the most impacted with the cancellation of ACA. Another strategy is the consideration of a in-house insurance network much like an IPA, which the organization itself is the insurer and provider. However, a more complex and detailed studying is necessary to ensure this strategys viability.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on how strategic planning and decision-making for healthcare organizations are impacted. Do you think if all Americans had free healthcare like Canada, it would minimize issues for hospitals?
