Global Studies Cyberspace Threats Discussion

Drawing from the readings, lecture slides and class discussions, write a 750-word-double-spaced essay addressing the following prompt.

Identify and describe at least three processes in cyberspace that are threatening to liberal democracies around the world. (In answering this portion of the prompt you should look at issues such as privacy, disinformation, “post-truth,” automation, permanent low intensity cyber war, and a potential for an escalation of a single cyber attack to either an all-out cyber war or the use of weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear, chemical or biological). Based on the material discussed in the second part of the quarter, what could be done to eliminate at least some of those threats? Is there any effective deterrence of deliberate spreading of disinformation such as the one Russians had engaged in Ukraine, the U.S., the UK, and Spain, among other countries? Is there an effective deterrence against other forms of cyberattacks?

There is, of course, no single answer to any of these questions and I am not looking for a correct or incorrect answer. Rather, I am interested in your assessment referencing the material we read and discussed in class. Your assessments should not be impressionistic but should instead be supported by the concepts and evidence that found in the course materials. In other words, you should justify them. Providing direct quotes in the take-home final essay is uncustomary. If you reference the course slides there is no need for citations but if you reference the textbooks or the outside sources, you should indicate so with footnotes or endnotes. Lastly, the manuscript style (APA, Harvard, Chicago, MLA) for this assignment is of your choice.
