I picked VMware because I wanted to learn more about it. It seems much more scalable and containerized. It seems as if it would work on large businesses using many different applications. Large business use many different techniques to customize and create their servers so this is important in the virtual world too. It doesn’t have good free products or learnability because it is complicated although it does have support. Someone who is well versed in networking and virtualization could ask these people specific questions and have them answered fast which is extremely helpful for a lead security person at a company. I learned virtualization on hyper-v and created a Windows network. With larger sized networks more money is needed to be spent for better security features and I think hyper-v targets you towards windows. Cisco is another product I know well and know they charge on their products but are arguably better despite Windows getting the bid to convert the U.S government to the cloud!

I have worked with both hypervisors, and both have their uses in specific environments. However, if you don’t know how much you will grow or what operating systems you need to support, the only choice is VMware.

VMware supports more operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Unix, and macOS. On the other hand, Hyper-V support is limited to Windows plus a few more, including Linux and FreeBSD. Also, In terms of storage, VMware’s Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) is better than Hyper-V’s ReFS, or Resilient File System, especially when it comes to data at rest encryption and clustering. VMware is simple to use and highly secure.

VMware offers a variety of features too that make managing a virtual machine much more manageable and scalable. Some of the features are vMotion, which allows the live migration of virtual machines even while running, Storage vMotion, allowing migration of virtual disks or configuration files; and VDS or Virtual Distributed Switches, a virtual switch for connecting to multiple hosts.

Although priced higher, VMware offers the most flexibility and is the clear choice for me. There is the adage of you get what you pay for.
