RC Ellicott City in Maryland Flash Flood City Destroyed Infrastructure Discussion
Question Description
Search the Internet to find a video news clip or article illustrating the United States government’s medical response to a natural or man-made disaster. In your discussion, list the source of your example and evaluate what healthcare policy must have been operational – or should have been – to enable quick action when such a disaster struck.
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ postings in any of the following ways:
- Build on something your peer said
- Explain why and how you see things differently.
- Ask a probing or clarifying question.
- Validate an idea with your own experience
- PEER 1
- Here in Florida during Hurricane Charley back in 2004 was brutal. The medical response team was on top of it with no cost help from the Red Cross. Many people were out of jobs, homes, & etc. However, always be prepared for these natural disasters is key.
- PEER 2
- In June of 2018, Houghton County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was annihilated with once-in-a-lifetime flooding in what became known as the Father’s Day Flood. The flooding caused “tens of millions” of dollars of damage to many people who were without flood insurance as it wasn’t even offered in the area. A life was lost, countless roads were washed out. It took over a month for the president to declare it a disaster, which unlocked funding for public facilities and roads, but did not provide anything for individuals. FEMA declined the request for assistance. In November of 2019, FEMA finally agreed to help cover the cost for one specific road project.
Missing from this situation was response for this destroyed small area. FEMA has fine-tuned their response to large disasters, but these small areas are missed and the state & local governments are left to saddle the bills and the immediate work. Now, there were local deficiencies. This was a “100 Year Flood” so nobody was truly prepared. The county has since rewritten their hazard mitigation plan in response. They also continue the battle to be able to have flood insurance coverage, but it “hasn’t happened frequently enough” to allow it, according to regulations. This is an unforunate lack.
