Nearly every day, television, radio, newspapers and internet news summarize the results from research studies, sometimes in ways which involve significant omissions or distortions. Studies themselves can deceive participants and the public with the manner in which the data was collected and analyzed.

Find a current article using an internet news search that summarizes a research study relevant to human development at any stage of the life span. As you read the account of the study, try to determine the strength of the content and reporting. Is the research qualitative or quantitative? Does it clearly distinguish between correlation and causation? Are there potential ethical issues surrounding the study or the way in which it is being reported? Then, address each of the following in your post:

• Provide the title, link, and citation for the article you chose.
• Briefly summarize the article.
• Is the title an accurate summary of the study described? Explain.
• What conclusions does this article imply? Is the conclusion warranted by the study described? Why or why not?
• What questions do you have after reading the article? Does anything seem to have been left out?
• The scientific community has ethical standards for conducting and reporting research, but the media does not. If you had the power to create guidelines for the press’s reporting of a research study, what would you recommend? Why?

After completing your initial post, respond to at least ONE of your classmates’ posts. In your responses, comment on similarities or differences between the reporting of your classmate’s chosen study and your own. Are there trends in reporting that might improve or distort the public’s overall understanding of these studies?
