CJ 130 Grand Canyon University Future Correctional Staff Discussion
Question Description
Discussion post:
Introduction
In this unit, we have explored the correctional field from the viewpoint of correctional staff. There are many who may not understand the correctional field and wonder why anyone would enter this as a career choice. Note that the career choice to become a correctional officer does not meet the definition of professional employment. Many may not want to enter this type of career because it is not seen as a professional field.
In this discussion, imagine you have been a correctional officer for 10 years. You love your work and have even talked several of your friends into becoming a correctional officer. There have been a couple of friends who have ventured into other careers because they do not feel working as a correctional officer is real work. Nevertheless, you still try to encourage others that the correctional setting is a rewarding and challenging field. All of your co-workers know that you love what you do and even make remarks and sometimes even jokes about how overly enthusiastic you are about your job.
Because of your enthusiasm, you have been asked by your supervisor to speak to students at the local college. You discover the students you will be speaking to are currently enrolled in the criminal justice program. Many have not decided which field of criminal justice they will enter.
In your initial post:
- Construct two benefits of working in the correctional environment.
- Evaluate how education would play a vital role in the correctional field.
