ELAC Non Trophic Interaction Between Dugongs and Remoras Marine Biology Discussion

Question Description

Give one example of a nontrophic* interaction between 2 marine species.

(Nontrophic means not directly about eating or being eaten.)

Note:

It’s not just about eating. Ecology is about ALL the ways that species interact with each other and their environment. The simplest and most direct way that species interact is by eating each other and being eaten. We call everything about eating “trophic interactions”. Food webs are well studied and easy to observe. But, they are not all of the story. Species interact with each other in many other ways such as competition (interactions that make the species less successful), facilitation (interactions that make the species more successful), disturbances (one organism killing another, purposefully or accidentally, but not eating it) and symbioses (different species living in or on each other in a biologically dependent way).

Do not repeat earlier examples in the Discussion, or from the course modules. .

DO NOT MENTION THESE SPECIES AS IT HAS ALREADY BEEN METIONED BY OTHER STUDENTS:

anemone and clownfish

shrimp and fish

crabs and sea snails

octopus and a coral reef

sea pens and redfish larvae
