Question Description

Framing Your Proposal

Your topic, or thesis, will need to be vetted by your peer-review group and approved by Professor Kocol before you begin writing the actual paper. Please carefully read and follow the directions below. It is entirely appropriate to outline these key elements and label them explicitly in your proposal.

  • Key Trends: Political scientists study trends. Do you see any prominent trends which can be developed and utilized to shed light on your subject?
  • Key Questions: Are there notable points of interest, or inquiry, which you can develop? If you are reading your sources carefully, you will have several questions. Be selective and try to pick a few important/relevant topics.
  • Alternatives: Identify any notable alternatives.
  • Sources of Conflict/Debate: Were there any significant political objections to the trends you plan to examine?
  • Sources: What are the sources you intend to utilize? Primary, secondary, etc.
  • Approach/Process: Briefly explain how you plan on developing and illuminating your topic/area of interest?
  • Preliminary Thesis: It does not have to be written in stone but should demonstrate substantial critical reflection on your part. Once you complete this step, you will reorganize your research proposal by placing this element at the top of this submission.
