Poverty Analysis and Underdevelopment Assignment: Part I: Select one of the five people that Isbister highlights in the chapter “A World of Poverty.” Discuss how the person’s narrative contributes to our understanding of poverty. Make specific reference to the definition of poverty that Isbister outlines in the chapter, including the differences between absolute and relative poverty (define each), and experiences of insecurity, deprivation, and domination. Remember that Isbister argues poverty is a “relational” term, which suggests that poverty also reflects power dynamics in society. Part II: The second part of the assignment asks you to consider how the select person’s narrative relates to explanations of underdevelopment. Which theory or theories best explain how and why this person is impoverished? Use your lecture notes about modernization, dependency and Marxist theory to make your argument. You can also research the specific historical context of the country your person resides within to better understand which theories may apply.
