Answer three of the following four questions. You must answer question 1), and then two of questions 2), 3), and 4). Total words for all answers together may not exceed 1,200. No citations to literature are required but may be used.

1) Discuss either the thought of Thomas Hill Green and Harold Laski, or the thought of Edwin Cannan.

2) To what extent do you agree or disagree with John Stuart Mill’s statement that it is “better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied, better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied”? To what extent is Mill’s statement compatible with the theory of utility?

3) Discuss the thought of Adam Smith.

4) What has been the influence of Marx’s thought on economic growth and political freedom? Be sure to include discussion of Marx’s view of the appropriate role of government.
