Whichever sector of the health care delivery system you are interested in, it is important to understand how the overall system evolved to the present moment. Therefore, the coursework in this assessment concentrates on building your fundamental knowledge base regarding the history and evolution of health care delivery. Your focus will be on the historical milestones in four basic components of the U.S. health care delivery system: medicine and medical education, hospitals, public health, and health insurance. As part of understanding the history of the U.S. health care system, explore the U.S. National Library of Medicine – History of medicine collections: Films & videos (linked in the Resources).

Due to the constant state of change in our health care system, it is important for you (and your career) to learn to access and utilize current, credible information sources to stay informed about what is happening in the industry. For this assessment and the course, you are required to have access to (or subscribe to) a number of online resources, such as journals, e-newsletters, website blogs, et cetera.
