Cuyamaca College Rectilinear Motion of Particles Discussion Questions

Question Description

I’m working on a mechanical engineering project and need support to help me understand better.

For this project option, you (as an individual) will write a 4-12 page paper covering the concepts and topics since the beginning of the course! These topics include:

Topics

Chapters of the book

Rectilinear motion of particles

12.1-12.2

Rectilinear motion of particles – piecewise continuous motion

12.3

Curvilinear motion – rectangular coordinates

12.4 – 12.6

Curvilinear motion – normal/tangential (path) coordinates

12.7

Curvilinear motion – cylindrical coordinates

12.8

Curvilinear motion – continued

Relative and dependent motion of particles

12.9 – 12.10

Particle kinetics: Rectangular coordinates

13.1 – 13.4

Particle kinetics: normal/tangential coordinates

13.5

Particle kinetics: cylindrical coordinates

13.6

Particle work and energy

14.1-14.3

Power, efficiency, and conservation of energy

14.4 – 14.6

Linear momentum and impulse

15.1-15.2

Conservation of momentum for systems of particles

15.3

Impact

15.4Each topic DOES NOT need its’ own section. For example, it may be easiest to talk about curvilinear motion in one section, or you may find it easier to separate curvilinear motion into two sections. Do what works best for you!

The paper should be single spaced, size 12 font, Times New Roman. You do not need to have a specific format for your reference section (if you use one), but you should include one if you are using outside references besides the class book.

Additionally, 1 example problem from the topics above should be included in the paper and explained in detail (Like we have been doing for the HW and Lecture Activities)! That is 1 example problem in total!

Make sure to review the rubric before starting this assignment!

The rubric refers to mastery, general knowledge, poor knowledge, or no knowledge. For reference, below is an example of these levels of knowledge/details related to the definition of the moment of a force.

Mastery General Knowledge Poor knowledge No Knowledge

The moment of a force is the tendency for the force to cause rotation of a particle/rigid body about a given point in space. One of the key features here is that the moment of the force is dependent upon where we measure it from; the point in space that we calculate the moment. Mathematically, we calculate the moment of the force about a point A as MA=rA×FMA=rA×F , where MA is the moment of the force as a vector, F is the force vector, and rA is the position vector from A to any location along the line of action of the force. The above mathematical representation is in vector form and works in all situations. However, sometimes the scalar form of the equation is easier to work with: MA=rA?F?sin(?)MA=rA?F?sin?(?)

where the moment, position vector are in scalar form and ?? is the angle between the position vector and force vector. (A visual drawing of this would really make this definition amazing)
