University of South Florida Safety Analysis of the Incident Project

Question Description

I’m working on a chemical engineering project and need support to help me learn.

I’m working on a chemical engineering project and need support to help me understand better.

This semester, your project for this class will focus on introducing you to the critically important topic of safety, particularly chemical process safety, and on allowing you to use some of the skills you have developed in the class to analyze a safety problem. Safety is an incredibly important topic for engineers, particularly chemical engineers, and simply needs to become engrained in the way you think about the world around you. It is particularly important that you go to work everyday with a safety mindset and that you help foster a safety culture in your workplace.

Part 1:

In the first part of the project, we will introduce you to the excellent SAChE Safety Certificate Program which offers safety training and certification for undergraduate chemical engineering students (and to practicing professionals as well) on a variety of topics. To give you a good jumpstart on becoming immersed in safety concepts, in this Part 1 of the project you will be required to complete at least 2 of the Level 1 SAChE safety modules. Follow the instructions in the associated PDF file below to access, complete, and properly document your completion of the SAChE safety program modules.

ITEMS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR PART/TASK 1: You will submit copies of your SACHE Safety Certificates and other items requested in the Safety Project – SAChE Safety Certificate Assignment PDF file above.

Part 2:

In the second part of the project, we will introduce you to several methods for analyzing safety incidents and for performing risk analysis on processes.

Task 2-1: First watch the short video that introduces you to the “NFPA Diamond” that is used to quickly communicate the level and types of hazards associated with a chemical.

ITEMS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR TASK 2-1: Do a web search and find the NFPA diamonds for the following 4 compounds: methane, acetone, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Include pictures of those 4 NFPA diamonds in the material you submit for this portion of the assignment with each NFPA diamond labelled as to what compound it represetns. In roughly a paragraph, discuss the differences you observe in their NFPA ratings and try to discuss why you feel the different compounds receive the different ratings that they do based on their physical properties.

Task 2-2: Second review the information on Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) found at either:

https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3514.html (Links to an external site.)

or

https://vividlearningsystems.com/safety-toolbox/how-to-read-an-sds-sheet (Links to an external site.)

After reviewing one of the websites above, look at the following SDS sheet for the common chemical ACETONE which you may have used as an organic solvent in your chemistry lab.

You should also do a web search and find another example of an SDS sheet for ACETONE and compare one you find to that provided above from LabChem. This will give you some idea of the differences you may encounter in SDS sheets provided by different companies and sources.

ITEMS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR TASK 2-2: For this part of the assignment, write a short paragraph summarizing the primary hazards of acetone and the kinds of precautions you should take when working with it.

Task 2-3: Watch and review the short video below which describes how so-called “bow tie diagrams” are used in process safety analysis.

ITEMS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR TASK 2-3: There is no specific item to be submitted for this task. You will need to construct and submit a bowtie diagram in the next task.

Task 2-4: Complete the safety incident review and analysis in the assignment file below.

ITEMS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR TASK 2-3: Submit all portions of the assignment from the Safety Project-WeldingDrum PDF file above.

Submit all portions of the project that require submission (i.e. submission of the Part/Task 1 documents including the SAChE Safety Certificate assignment page and certificates and all of the Task 2 answers) as a single PDF file. Use the naming convention of “ECH 3002-Spring 2021-SafetyProject-Last Name-First Name.pdf” for your file that you submit.
