A best-selling memoir (Redefining Realness) written by Janet Mock, a black trans woman trailblazer in popular media who started her writing career as a pop culture journalist before becoming a lead television producer and screenwriter for the hit television show Pose.

*Paris Is Burning, a ground-breaking documentary about the New York City underground ballroom scene that became a refuge, a competitive arena, and a place of artistic cultivation for black and Latinx lgbt people, including trans-identified people.

*A Breakfast Club interview featuring Flame Monroe, a black trans woman and comedian who is known for her boundary-pushing comedy and political views.

Although all the content listed here does not cover everything about the world of trans people, it does give you a wide breadth of things that pertain to the trans identity. For this writing project, you should think about some of these things so that you can write an essay in which you take a position on the treatment of the trans identity within popular culture.

You should defend your position by using ideas from the book Redefining Realness and by using ideas found in at least one of the other works listed here. Therefore, your essay should cite the Janet Mock memoir you were required to read and at least one of the other works listed here. Your essay’s Works Cited page should therefore list at least two sources.

Other Considerations

It is up to you to decide what your paper’s focus is. Some students may want to consider the paper topics that students gave in the discussion board assignment about the trans identity.

This assignment is not a summary, plot analysis, or book report. This is an assignment that should be done in multiple stages. And this assignment is consistent with course objectives outlined in your course syllabus. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE

The final product for this writing project will be a proofread and edited paper of yours that contains an essay of a least 1,800 words AND a Works Cited page. This final version of your paper should also conform to MLA style, so that means your paper needs to be double-spaced and written in a 12-point, Times New Roman font. And your paper’s bottom, top, right, and left margins should be one inch. All final draft papers must be uploaded to the appropriate location by 11:59 p.m on Sunday, April 25. Your final work must be composed on a Microsoft Word document formatted as doc.x or rtf. Your instructor will not accept final papers that are saved in wps, odt, or PDF formats. All final drafts need to be uploaded to the proper place in Canvas.
