Topic: First amendment rights for students in public institutions regarding the LGBTQIA community

• HIstorical Background of the LGBTQIA community in society and in school
• Student first amendment rights
• The struggles of the LGBTQIA students because of the first amendment
• Schools concerns about students who identify with the LGBTQIA community, and things the school incorporate to help those students
• Your citations should be in a recognizable format (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc) and be a full citation, and not just author and date.

• Being homosexual used to be illegal, people used to have to hide it
  • The case of the man who wa fired from his job because he was caught doing a homosexual act
  • Used to/still face a lot of harassment and hardships in school (MAB v. Board of Education Oklahoma city ) analysis the case

• Students have the right to express themselves in a positive way but not promote hate (deep description)

THESIS: The first amendment is a right that I believe everyone should have, however, because it can be used to harm others, it needs to be used with discretion. When focusing on the first amendment in regards to public universities and the LGBTQIA community on campuses, it is crucial that students are not given the same freedom of speech as the outside society. When it comes to campus life for people of the LGBTQIA community, they have always had a very hard time being verbally harassed by their peers constantly. In this paper, I will be discussing how the first amendment was used in schools and how it has changed and progressed to what it is today. Also, I will discuss the struggles of the LGBTQIA community due to the first amendment and how schools do a better job now of trying to protect them from harassment. I will argue that the first amendment as it is now should be rediscussed because it is not sufficient enough to prevent the harm of people of the LGBTQIA community.
