Student post down below:

It is no secret that the United States leads the world in locking people up. In Nebraska, the prison population has established troubling numbers in prison overcrowding. Men and Women are locked up for minor crimes for years at a time. It is a travesty and many leave prison as hardened criminals due to escalating violence inside of prison, lack of sufficient programming, and unattainable goals to master a trade or receive a college education. As you know, if you receive a felony drug conviction you are automatically ineligible to apply for federal student aid. These men and women have no direction once they are released. There is a small percentage that are able to find gainful employment.

I have chosen the Honu Home in Lincoln, Nebraska as my strategic plan subject. The Honu (Ha-new) Home is a non-profit organization that provides housing, substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, and job training for recently released inmates that are determined to trade their hardened criminal past for positive change. (mha-ne.org, 2021.) According to their website, the Honu Home is a Peer-Operated Respite. Many of the counselors, staff, and administrators are former inmates who have experienced mental health trauma, engaged in criminal activity, and were determined to change their mindset. Noted on their website, “We believe in giving people the right and responsibility to make choices and be the directors of their own lives” (mha-ne.org, 2021). I had the opportunity to visit the Honu Home approximately two years ago. I was impressed with the positive energy of all the staff and the cleanliness of the facility. The living quarters are spacious, classrooms are well equipped, and the kitchen/dining room area provide a family-like atmosphere. I’m excited to learn more about the organization.
