A current and recent practice change in nursing that has resulted from research is bedside shift report. When hand-off between nursing staff is done at the bedside, this helps to reduce errors and involves that patient more. Evidence based practice shows that implementing bedside report increases patient satisfaction rates and reduces errors and patient falls. Common barriers to consistently doing bedside report is push back from nursing staff. Many nurses are not accustomed to doing bedside report and do not want to change their methods. Some nurses feel that report takes longer by doing bedside report, as well as a concern for patient confidentiality if there are other family members in the room, or another patient sharing the room. Translational research can provide all the data, statistics, and show that bedside report is more beneficial. It is a matter of nurses being open and accepting to change and will try something new for the benefit for the patient to get it up and rolling andhappening consistently.
