LAVC Irish Theatre Bringing People Together & Expressing Identities Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a theater question and need support to help me understand better.
Early Irish theatre helped to create a sense of national identity in the years before Ireland achieved independence from Great Britain, before Ireland officially became an independent nation in 1922. This happened in particular when playwrights created characters and plotlines primarily focusing on Ireland’s underrepresened populations in isolated rural areas and slums in urban centers such as Dublin, representation which hadn’t really existed onstage earlier in that country.

- discuss an instance where you experienced or are aware of theatre helping a group of people form their identity, a general formative theatre experience you have had, or an area where you see theatre connecting with society, history, and/or politics or other social topics. You could include larger global issues or could discuss a bonding experience during your school theatre experiences prior to Valencia or other areas!
- Pose a question about identity-building theatre.
