In this assignment you will be requesting staining and/or biochemical tests to help you identify your unknown bacterium. Answer each of the prompts below and you will receive your first time results within 48 hours. The test results will appear in the grade book comments for this assignment and it will direct you to a picture number in the staining and/or biochemical results banks

For each stain and/or biochemical test that you want to request please include:

A. Name of the staining process or biochemical test

(Please give me the name of the test. This test could be one that you found in Ex 40 and then looked up in your lab manual or a test that you found during your research.)

B. What Exercise in your lab manual will you use to help you understand and interpret your results?

Yes, you can use the internet to help here too but it’s always best to start with your lab manual…

C. Give a brief explanation of what this test is looking for and how you will interpret the results. Be sure to answer these prompts in your response:

– What biochemical function are you testing for? (For example you might be testing for the Gram reaction, or the presence or absence of a capsule, or the ability to ferment sucrose or the ability to digest starch, etc.)

– What will a positive reaction look like and what will a negative reaction look like? (Be specific. Will there be a color difference or an absence of growth or something else? Make sure to provide enough information to be able to interpret the picture of the results when you get it.)
