Listen to the one-hour episode of This American Life titled, Take the Money and Run for Office. (linked below) After listening, write a brief report. The report should contain three separate sections that address all the points in each set of questions. 1. Describe the process used by members of Congress for raising funding for their campaigns. What is it about the fundraising process that most people get backwards (as noted by one of those interviewed)? Some candidates find it easier to raise money than others. Indicate why lobbyists give more to some types of candidates than others. What do most members think about this process of raising funds? (approximately 150-200 words)
2. What, if anything, do interest groups get in return for their political contributions to candidate campaigns? Indicate the varying perspectives on what money buys. On what types of policy issues are campaign contributions more likely to be influential? (approximately 150-200 words)
3. What reforms have been implemented in recent years to try to lessen the influence of money in politics? Why have these reform efforts often not worked and what prevents additional reforms? (approximately 150-200 words)
