Argument Essay Assignment

Your Argument essay will be at least 3 full pages and no more than 5 pages (not including Works Cited) and be completed following MLA format.

Develop an essay supporting your side of the issue you have chosen/been assigned. Here is the rhetorical situation for you to consider:

Genre – Academic essay
Audience – College educated American adults who disagree with your stance on the issue
Purpose – Persuade and inform using logical, emotional, and ethical appeals

Tone – Respectful and knowledgeable

Regardless of which topic or side you choose, your argument essay must contain the following elements:

a. A claim (made clear in your introduction and thesis)
b. Rhetorical appeals (logic, emotion, ethics) and relevant reasoning
c. In-text citations of credible sources (minimum 3)
d. A counterargument and refutation
e. A Works Cited page with a minimum of 3 references (should be the same as your in-text citations)

As you develop your argument, consider what is credible (ethos), who would be harmed if your advice/position is not followed (pathos), and statistics and facts that would make someone agree with you (logos). Statistics are good ways to grab attention in your intro, or make your reader think following your conclusion.

A note about topic choice:

You will be given the chance to pick your top 3 choices for argument topics. While I would like to grant everyone the topic they want, it does not work out that way. Topics are given in the order they are requested. The earlier you submit your topic choice form, the more likely you are to get the topic you want. Those who wait to submit their form may not even get any of their top 3. Everyone in the class will write about a different topic. Your assigned topic will be given to you in the comments of your graded topic choice form. Once you have your topic, you can begin on your outline and searching for reliable sources to back up your argument.
