Old Westbury Comprehensive Sight of Hope The Future of African Americans Discussion

Question Description

peers response:

Racial identity is a component of human beings which helps them to discover themselves and their family. I am first going to compare both the Balugahale article and mine. Tajhanai Balugahale article on racial identity is “Family Influences on Racial Identity Among African American Youth” and speaks on African American youth and families. Balugahale’s article is showing that limited resources keep them into a mentality of poverty and an increase in the crime rate. My article “Enraged Against the Machine” examines the experience of institutional and cultural racial discrimination that relates to the direction towards activism in the black community among black adolescents and emerging adults. My article is showing that there is a positive relationship between experiences of institutional racial discrimination and high-risk activism orientation for Black adolescents and emerging adults who reported that other people view Black people negatively.” (Hope, E. C., Gugwor, R., Riddick, K. N., & Pender, K. N. (2019). This finding suggests that black individuals who decide to become socially active in their communities and protest tend to also be the people who have stories of being discriminated by the institutions in America which should be used to help them.

In contrast, Balugahale article ponders an out for the African American communities and helpful advice. Balugahale’s article says “So, if the strategies are fundraisers and developing of black-owned businesses, this is how they can keep their money inside of their communities.” My article is showing that African American activism is high when they have nationalism in one’s self. My article doesn’t focus on solutions like the Balugahale article, but it does provide a glimpse of full hope for the future for African Americans in this country. I do question that if we as a nation do not provide an equal and fair world for the next generation, will the next generation be able to make a change within the current institutional system we have today?
