DVC Peoples General Understandings & Minority and Immigration Discussion

Part A – Talk to three people about the meanings of “minority” and “immigration.”

The goal is to learn about people’s general understandings of the concepts of minority and immigration. Ask them the following. Feel free to ask other questions.

• When you hear the word minority, what immediately comes to mind? What images does this word conjure in your mind?
• Can you think of where you learned about the concept of minority?
• Do you think you have the same understandings of ‘minority’ as you did 3 years ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago, etc.? If not, why do you think your understandings have changed over time?
• When you hear the word immigration, what immediately comes to mind? What images does this word conjure in your mind?
• What are your thoughts about immigration? Are there both pros and cons?
• Can you think of where you learned about immigration? Have your understandings changed over time?

Part B – Submit on Canvas via Turnitin Saturday, November 16th by 11:59PM

In approximately 4-5 double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins, answer the following. You must use the following format.

Section #1 – In approximately 1 ½ -2 pages, describe who you talked to (no names, use friend, co-worker, mother, cousin, husband, partner, etc.) and a little about their background (if you know anything), then summarize your conversation with each person.

Section #2 – In 1 ½ -2 pages, use your interviews and one reading from week 6 to discuss what you learned about perceptions of “minority” and “immigration.” You must refer to specific points in Sections #1 in your discussion. You must refer to specific points regarding the main research results discussed in the reading. Think about any connections between the reading and the interviews. Think about whether or not the interviews seem similar to the points in the reading or contradict any of the points. Feel free to use week 6 lecture material, but this does not replace the reading.
