Creative Media Project Assignment:

Imagine that an important funder has invited you to pitch an idea for a documentary film you’re excited to make because you believe it could produce significant social change. In order to convince the funder to give you the money, you’ll need to create a pitch document or trailer that serves as a “proof of concept.” They know you don’t have the funding to make a fully professional trailer (that is why you’re asking for the money)! But what they want to see is your creativity, passion and understanding of the media landscape.

For this assignment, choose a social issue, trend or story that, if it were turned into a documentary, has the potential to make real social impact. Using whatever creative media skills you possess (filmmaking, editing, photography, design, etc), you will create a short creative media project that can be used as a “proof of concept” for a film you’d like to make.

The project will not be graded based on your technical skills, but rather on your creativity, attention to detail, incorporation of concepts learned in class and overall persuasiveness. Your job is to get your audience to care about the issue!

Types of projects include

1.A film trailer (2-4 min) using footage that you shoot or archival footage found on the internet.

2.An infographic-based or animated short film (2-3 min) that explains the issue or story, introduces us to the characters and gives us a hint at the visual journey we’ll go on in the film.
