3. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details

Sequence of events ( process).

  1. Read the story Hope’s Gift, pausing to check for understanding. (Ask students which side of the war Hope’s father was on, what Hope may have been picking in the field when she joined her mom, and which side of the war Hope’s master was on).
  2. Once the story is over, explain to the students that they will be working in a group with their peers to place the events from the story in chronological order. Ask students to share out what chronological order means.
  3. Break students up into groups and hand each group a plastic baggie with 6 slips of paper on it. (Each slip of paper has a different event from the story on it)
  4. Have each group go to their own space and work together to put the events from the story in chronological order.
  5. Walk around and check in with the groups as they are working on putting the events in chronological order.
  6. After about 5 minutes, call the students attention and ask a group to volunteer to share out which of the 6 events came first. Ask another group to share out the second, third, etc. until all groups have shared and until all events have been placed in order.
