Endocrine Function

The prevalence of diabetes is highest among Native Americans (33%), Non – Hispanics blacks (12.6%), Hispanics (11.8%), Asian – Americans (8.4%), then Whites (7.1%). C.B. is experiencing a number of female infections recently. In females frequent vaginal infections are signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. The complaints of left foot pain being weak and numb and difficult to flex for nearly three weeks. Her report of being very thirsty lately and the more frequency in urination at night. She has gained over 10lbs in the last 6 months are all signs and symptoms compatible with Type 2 diabetes.

If C.B. developed bacterial pneumonia on her right lower lobe, her glycemia values would spike, patients with Type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of death associated with pneumonia hospitalization. Risk of hyperglycemia at admission was increased among the diabetic patients, while high glucose levels were associated with increased mortality in all patients.

Non – pharmacologic approaches include a low – calorie diet weight loss and regular vigorous exercise. Pharmacologic approaches include the use of Metformin (Glucophage) and Glipizide ( Glucotrol), which would be the best initial therapy recommended to C.B.
