Synthesize/Apply/Reflect

A contingency contract can be a very helpful tool for teachers to teach appropriate behaviors in the classroom. It can be used with individual students or a group of students.

For this assignment you will use a student from your classroom (either now or in the past) who needs to learn appropriate behaviors. Using the guidelines on page 239 of your text and the examples on pages 240-241, you are to develop a contingency contract for this student. You also are to discuss how you will collect data to monitor the behavior. Reflection on your thoughts about using contingency contracts.

Assignment Guidelines

Your assignment must include:

  • A detailed description of the student that includes the age.
  • Write a contingency contract that includes:
    • The target behavior
    • A description of the target behavior in observable and measurable terms
    • The reinforcers
    • Clear guidelines and timeline of the contract
    • The contract written in terms that can be understood by the student
  • A description of how you will monitor and collect data on the target behavior
  • A reflection on the experience of writing the contract, and how you feel it can be helpful in your classroom. Also include the advantages and disadvantages of using contracts to teach positive behavior supports.
  • Citations from the class resources
