UWM ?Death and the Maiden Scene 2 Act I Analysis & Review Discussion

Question Description

1-as we did in the last assignment, let’s continue tracking our two major characters, their thoughts and actions, in the order they appear. First focus on Paulina. She admits to Dr. Miranda, “Isn’t it bizarre, that I should be telling you all this as if you were my confessor, when there are things I’ve never told Gerardo, or my sister, certainly not my mother” (29). What are the important revelations Paulina gives to Dr. Miranda?

2-When Paulina “imitates a male voice,” she is recalling the man who tortured her. Assuming her memory is accurate, what is the nature of this man, her torturer, his actions and the things he said to her?

3-Paulina has Dr. Miranda bound and under her control. What is the nature of her actions and dialog with Miranda, including the imitations of his past lines that she remembers? In what way is she expressing her power over him?

4-next, explain what important feelings and desires she expresses to Gerardo. Cite evidence for your comments, but also try to explain what she is telling him about her life in the past fifteen years, after imprisonment. Always consider the more obvious points first, then look for something deeper or implied.
