San Francisco State University Expansion of the Panama Canal in 2016 Discussion

Refer to the two articles under Files/Readings for Assignments marked (5) canal.pdf. As the expansion of the Panama Canal neared completion in 2016, many ports on the US east coast expanded to accommodate much bigger container vessels. It seems that those large vessels are arriving, but not necessarily by way of the Panama Canal. Why do you suppose this is happening? Why was it not anticipated? What difference does it make to container lines that there has been an increased flow of LNG exports westward through the Canal?
