In this section of the exam you will answer one of the following prompts in a short essay. Your essay must be a minimum of 4 paragraphs long and answer all parts of the prompt. You may use course content on Canvas, such as the American Yawp textbook and the PowerPoint presentations, as evidence to support your essay. However, use of outside sources, such as Google or Wikipedia, is not permitted. Select ONE of the following prompts to answer:

1) How did the United States become an empire in the 1890s? What were some of the justifications for imperial expansion? Explain at least 2 arguments used to support of American empire.

2) Economic historians argue that the stock market crash of 1929 did not cause the Great Depression. What were the causes of the Great Depression? Explain at least 2 root causes that led to the Great Depression

Many might view our current moment as evidence of the “failure” of the Civil Rights Movement to heal the wounds of racism and bridge the racial divisions in the country.
