Sample Body Paragraph (Topic 1) (20 points)

Thesis: To help food insecure students at Grossmont College, the college’s authorities can make changes such as decreasing the price of food in the cafeteria for students who are in need, using campus vending machines to distribute food to struggling students, offering assistance to help students registering for the government’s programs, and normalizing the use of the food pantry.

Body Paragraph

Another solution the college could implement is to set up vending machines on campus to give food to the students in need. As an answer to the food insecurity problem, many food pantries have opened up on campuses. In the article “Food Pantries at College Campuses across the U.S. Tackle Student Food Insecurity” Monica Levitan, the author, mentions that “Over 640 colleges and universities around the country operate food pantries on campus, according to data from the College and University Food Bank Alliance” (32). Grossmont has also opened up a food pantry called Gizmo’s Kitchen. One of the biggest problems with the pantry is the limited service times. The college’s food pantry is open only Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 pm. However, during these limited hours, some students might be working or in class. Besides, they might have class at night and don’t come to campus during these hours. I believe there is a solution for this problem; campus vending devices could be used to distribute donations from Gizmo’s Kitchen. They could be set up all over campus so that students could easily access them any time they are on campus. The students in need could be given a card from Gizmo’s Kitchen that they simply insert into the machine in order to access the food for free. In addition, the machines could be stocked by student and faculty volunteers with healthy food instead of the junk food that is usually found in vending machines. Not only would these vending machines help day-time students, but they would also benefit students who are taking night time classes. From my own experience being food insecure, I know how the pangs of hunger feel and how hunger creates anxiety and makes it so difficult to concentrate in class and complete homework. Having access to free healthy food donations from vending machines stationed all over campus could really help us students who are struggling.
