Ashworth College Week 4 Elbow Dislocation Discussion
Question Description
Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapters 11, 12, and 13 in your course text and review the NIH web pages Elbow Injuries and Disorders, Wrist Injuries and Disorders, And Hand Injuries and Disorders. Then, watch the Hand Anatomy Animated Tutorial video.
As highlighted in this weeks readings, pathologies to the elbows, wrists, and hands are a common experience. Some of you may have even encountered such conditions or injuries first-hand or know of an individual who has.
Select one of the subsequent cases and related pathology:
Alvin N.
A 34-year old male, who loves to play racquet ball and golf in his spare-time, complains about pain in his right elbow. After consulting his physician, he was diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis.
Hector G.
A 42-year old male has experienced a painful fall while skiing; he is complaining of extreme pain in his right elbow, which is also swollen. Hector is unable to bend his right arm. The diagnosis of elbow dislocation is made by the Emergency Care Physician.
Helen K.
A 55-year old female patient with diabetes complains about ongoing pain, tingling, and numbness in her left hand. After a nerve conduction study was performed, her physician diagnosed her with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Joan S.
An 82-year old female recently fell and is now complaining of pain when flexing her right wrist. She also experiences swelling and tenderness. After being examined by her physician and having undergone an x-ray, she was diagnosed with a Colles fracture.
In your discussion,
- Assess the common causes of your selected pathology.
- Research a video in the Ashford University Library via the Films On Demand database or another multimedia source of your choice which includes closed captioning and educates your peers about the pathology you selected above.
- Include a description on how to access the video, or include the direct link to your video within your discussion forum posting.
- Analyze how the change in structure can impact your selected persons function on a daily basis. How might the patient in the case study compensate in order to accomplish normal activities?
Reference your textbook, and include at least one additional scholarly or credible source to support your research and findings (see the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources table for assistance). All sources must be referenced and cited according to APA Style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (see Introduction to APA for assistance). Your initial post must be at least 250 words.
