Getting Started

Theoretical approaches supported with scientific research are foundational to evidence-based practice. Computer technology allows research to be conducted in a convenient and timely manner. You will read chapters in your textbook this week that describe the role of information literacy and use of computer technology in achieving evidence-based practice in the nursing profession. You will also conduct your own review of the literature to enhance your understanding of incorporating theory and research into practice that produces optimal patient outcomes.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

• Discuss the role of informatics in achieving evidence-based practice.
• Explore websites that support clinical research.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
2. Read chapters 3, 7, and 8 in the textbook: Applied Clinical Informatics for Nurses.
3. View the University of Minnesota/Evidence-Based Practice tutorial.
4. Download and open the Research and Data Websites file and explore each website.
5. Prepare to discuss the following prompts:
   1. Use your own words to share a definition of evidence-based practice. How has EBP been utilized to enhance practice and patient outcomes in your workplace? If you are not able to share an example from your workplace, cite an example from the literature on how EBP was used to improve patient outcomes. (Explore links provided in the resource list.)
   2. Describe how the use of computer technology benefits professionals in conducting research. Cite a minimum of one source, that is not your textbook, to support your description.
   3. Identify an outcome measure in your area of practice that might be improved. How can you use computer technology and research skills to begin the improvement process?
   4. Use the research and data websites provided in #4 above and discuss how three of these websites are useful for clinical nurses.
