What is Due?

1. Week 12 Discussion initial post: Public service, and the surrounding environment, has undergone tremendous change in recent history. The public’s view of public organizations and those who work within them has also shifted, although not necessarily in a linear manner over the last decade. Discuss these changes and the reasons that underlie them. Looking forward, what do you think the future holds for public service?

Introduction

“As the realm of public service and its relative partnerships (both social and economic) continues to change, so must the leadership charged with managing it.” (Henson, 2020, p. 327).

In this week’s readings and discussion, we consider the future of public administration. Our readings consider the role of gender in public administration, as well the relationship between gender and power in this context. Arguably, public service is built on collaboration and governance in politics, administration and economics. Values related to ethics, diversity and inclusion are cornerstones of public service. A strong, proper ethical framework should be the basis for public action and government function. Representation in government – both in terms of identity and values – are important for public service to be effective and engaging, and to serve the needs of a diverse citizenry.
