OP-ED ASSIGNMENT

Essay 3 – Digital Op-Ed – Joining the Conversation —

Write an 800-1200-word Op-Ed on the issue of “race” or prejudice in your home country. You may not write about another country because of the issue of ethos. Alternatively, you can write an op-ed about one of the concepts we discussed and include yourself/your country only briefly.

Requirements:

1. You must design your Digital Op-Ed after the New York Times or the Gulf News. This can be accomplished with Microsoft Word.
2. You must have a minimum of two hyperlinks. One must go to one our our readings/concepts. The other can go anywhere to support your point. You may have other live links going to definitions, news reports, statistics, etc. URLs are distracting. Make sure you highlight the title, author or relevant word and use the INSERT / Hyperlink feature.
3. You must have three or more strategies. See your strategies list and think ethos, pathos and logos.
4. To accomplish ethos, you must personally talk about yourself/your country in her essay. This can be done through a long personal story or a short reference.
5. You must have at least one image; include the url under the image.
6. Write a creative op-ed worthy title.
7. You must have a powerful conclusion; this is accomplished with drafting and attention to style.
8. You must have a powerful introduction; this is accomplished with drafting and attention to style.
9. Organization is flexible; consider one of the three options we discussed.
10. Paragraphing is important in opinion essays: short and direct.
11. Conversational tone.
12. Avoid “You”; instead use “I” or “We.”
13. After the intro, give background information.
