CSUN Childish Gambino Creative & Performative Genius Driving Social Change Graphics

Question Description

This first assignment aims to get you deeply acquainted with a performance-focused artist of your choice. This artist will serve as your guiding inspiration for the rest of the semester so choose thoughtfully – the work of this artist must be relevant to social critique, social change, or advocacy in some way! Your task is to create a pamphlet or mini-zine (6-8 pages) that,

1) describes the artist’s work, themes they deal with, and some important performances they have done,

2) the historical, cultural, and political context in which their work emerges. How does their work address, advance, or create social change? What kind of social change?

3) the styles and methods they use to create their performances. This is a fan-zine, so approach this as an opportunity to share with other what you love about this artist.

The text you include in the zine can be in the form of blurbs, quotations, fun facts, background information, manifestos, and most importantly some insightful critical analysis of the artist’s work.

You can use graphics, pictures, hand-drawings, stickers, etc. Zines are low-fi, underground modes of sharing knowledge – so have fun with it! Become an expert on this artist and share with us – the top three zines will be duplicated and circulated to the department – yes, it is an informal contest!
