Starting from this week, we will shift the focus of discussion from understanding the second language acquisition process to learning more about our bilingual students and how to create a welcoming learning environment for them. You will read and watch four pieces: Wright’s (2010) chapter introduces you to some foundation knowledge about bilingual students; the video Immersion showcases the schooling and life experience of a newcomer immigrant student, Moisés; Colorin Colorado’s video shares some suggestions from a teacher about creating a welcoming classroom environment for her students; Breiseth’s (2020) piece lists practical strategies that you can use to build relationships with your students.
For this week’s post, please share things that you did not know about bilingual students before finishing the readings and videos. In the post, start with your “misconception/ no-conception” about bilingual learners, and then share what you learn (your biggest takeaways, your aha moments) from the readings and videos. After sharing your post, you will then read your classmates’ posts and respond to two of them. Your responses should demonstrate your understanding of the original post and promote further thinking. The post should be 300-400 words. The responses should be at least 100 words. The post and responses are due on 11/4 by midnight.
