Your speech must be:

more than 3 minutes

less than 5 minutes

Purpose & Topic Guidelines

Tell us about an important invention or innovation in the history of your field.

An invention would involve a new technology, piece of equipment, machinery etc.

An innovation would involve a new set of ideas and related processes.

Recommended Organization

Section 14-1b of your text discusses several potentially relevant patterns for organizing the speech. I would recommend developing a main point for some(perhaps all) of the following:

1.the historical background (establishing the need that the innovation or invention addressed)

2.the invention or innovation and its key contributors

3.the impact of the invention or innovation on your field — fleshed out with 2-3 vivid examples of its real-life impact

Recommended Evidence

Section 13-2 of your text discusses the key kinds of evidence used in a speech. I would recommend you do the following:

Frame the speech as something of a story, with one or more protagonists — those who developed the invention or innovation.

Set up the background as a problem, obstacle, or crisis that was holding the field back from achieving something important.

Introduce the new invention or innovation as the hero that saves the day. (Not exaggerating its impact, but rather helping us to understand the importance of the difference it made!)

Vividly tell 1, 2, or 3 short stories (detailed examples) that help drive home the impact so that we can fully appreciate its meaning and significance.

Throughout the speech, combine brief examples, detailed examples, relevant statistics (when available), and ideally a few great quotations from those who witnessed or reported the impact.
