San Diego State University Who Killed Stephanie Crowe Research
Question Description
Your assignment this week will require you to do some research and read about a case that was very high profile here in San Diego. It was followed by people and reported on the news all overthe country.
It involved the killing of a young girl. The girls brother was initially charged with the murder,
along with this two friends. They confessed to the crime. But later it was determined that those confessions were coerced and another suspect was investigated, a homeless man that was in the area the night of the murder. He was tried twice for the crime with two different results.
And the question remains: Who killed Stephanie Crowe?
Start your research with the link provided here:
http://www.aleidalaw.com/who-killed-stephanie-crowe/.
It gives a good overview of the case from beginning to end. Then you can follow the
links at the bottom of the page for more information, or do your own internet search to learn
more.
The following is another good source that will help you understand the case:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-confession-14-10-2004/
A video documentary can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGdYgU55JFs
Get familiar with the case, then answer the following questions:
1. Describe the crime and the crime scene.
2. Why did police and prosecutors narrow in on the victims brother as their main
suspect?
3. What evidence pointed to another suspect? What do we know about Richard Tuite?
4. Analyze the work of the police and the prosecutors. Consider such things as whether
they concentrated on the brother too quickly, did they fully investigate the case from
the beginning, did prosecutors push too hard or not enough in prosecuting the brother,
were they right in dropping the charges, and should prosecutors have brought Tuite to
trial? Were they seeking justice as the law requires?
5. Now analyze the work of the defense attorneys. There are two defense attorneys in
this case. The first one represented the brother of the victim, she was a key player in the
case. The second is Tuites attorney who represented him in both trials. Were they
effective representatives for their client? Were they zealous in representing their client?
Why or why not.
6. Now you get to tell me your opinion. Who killed Stephanie Crowe?
Please number your answers. Your paper should be 2-3 pages. Use APA format (for
information about APA and a sample paper go to the following link: https://
owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/18/). APA requires double spacing, 1 inch margins,
and Times New Roman 12 point font.
When I say 2.5-3 pages, I mean that it must be at least two and a half full pages. Anything less will lose points. There is a lot to talk about in this case, it will be easy to fill 2.5 pages. The challenge will be keeping it under 3 pages. Please do not go over 4.
Make sure you cite your sources, especially when you quote the material. If you copy and paste a sentence or two into your paper, you must use quotation marks and a citation to tell us where it came from. Even if you are paraphrasing the material and its not exact, you still must cite where the information came from. If an entire paragraph is information from one source, you can place your cite at the end of the paragraph.
Make sure you answer ALL the questions. Papers that only answer some of the questions or
include very short answers will lose points.
Have some fun with this, its an interesting case!
