University of Virginia Three Uses of English Discussion

Question Description

1) This journal entry should be 100-150 words

First, watch this video by Jamila Lyiscott about the three Englishes she uses:

Second, reflect on the language(s) you use in different situations, using these questions to guide you:

  • What does it mean to be a flexible writer in terms of the language you use (or, in Jamila Lyiscott’s words, to be “articulate”)?
  • What messages have you heard or internalized about using particular languages in particular situations (whether directed at yourself or others)?
  • Have you been told NOT to use some languages in specific situations? Why?

Third, reflect on the language and writing skills you want to develop this semester. What are your own, personal goals? What can help you reach them?

2) Make a comment with asking questions (100-150 words)

The exigence (event that strongly invites utterance) of the article is found under Section II of the article under point 1. It states, “While these risks have been present for a long time in connection with computers and mobile phones, the impact of the risks will increase as the number of IoT devices increases.” The exigence is warning consumers that security risks and data breaches are a problem that is not going away any time soon as more and more IoT devices are being used and created.

I believe that the audience of the article is anyone who uses IoT devices. The reason I think it is just anyone using these devices and not specifically more educated people in a particular field or major is because in the beginning of the article the author gives a description and examples of different type of IoT devices such as home appliances, automobile and employee sensors, etc. These descriptions and examples help make the rest of the article easier to read for someone who isn’t as familiar with the topic.

Some of the constraints of the argument the article makes include the way the article is laid out and organized by numbers, letters, and roman numerals, followed by topic titles. Another thing is that the article is written by a student within St. John Review which is a student-run organization apart of St. Jon’s University whom “publish scholarly articles of legal significance across all topic.” (St. John’s Law Review, n.d.)

The argument is framed to appeal to ethos, pathos, and logos by explaining jargon and incorporating real-life cases and situations regarding consumer safety and security. The author citing these cases reflects the ethos because they’re proving where they got the information. The author giving a description of the cases as well as explaining what the different jargon means appeals to the logos aspect by helping give readers’ logic to understand better than if the author was just rambling on as if the reading already knew everything. I honestly struggled finding specific examples of pathos in the article but I think just the way the author went on and on about all the types of security risks (physical, privacy, etc.) that come with owning or even just operating IoT devices can leave the reader a bit on edge and taking the overall message more seriously about how there aren’t any IoT-specific regulations on the federal level.
