Colorado State University Cohens D Measure Paper
Question Description
Read Example 1 and explain your take away. Add additional information. Your document should include minimum 200 words plus credible references.
Example 1:
A recent survey I found online studies to see if there is any correlation between breastfeeding and joint pain and knee osteoarthritis in females. 3454 females were surveyed and 298 had not breastfed, 1042 females had breastfed for 1-24 months, 815 females had breastfed for 25-48 months, and 1299 females had breastfed for over 49 months (Kim, Kim, Noh, et al, 2020). Out of all 3454 participants, 1731 females had joint pain and 739 were diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (Kim, Kim, Noh, et al, 2020).
Cohens d is a measure that compares the differences between two means (Holmes, Illowsky, Dean & Hadley, 2017). If d is between 0-0.2, the effect is small. If d is around 0.5, the effect is medium, and if d approaches 0.8, the effect is large (Holmes, Illowsky, Dean & Hadley, 2017). This test would be good to use for this survey because if we tested the mean between women who breastfed to the mean of women who had joint pain or knee osteoarthritis, we could see if how large the effect is and determine if there was a correlation between the two events.
Cohens d measures the difference of the two means divided by the pooled standard deviation and the formula can be found in section 10.2 of the textbook.
