Concordia University Legalizing Drugs vs Drug Restriction Research Paper

Through reading the text, hopefully, you guys have detected that drugs and society are a lot more complicated than normally presented in DARE programs and health courses. It is a nuanced field that has many interesting issues behind the common conceptualizations. One of my hopes of this course is for the student to carefully examine their own ideologies and beliefs and potentially understand the complexity of the field at a deeper level.

To that end, your first paper in this course will be on drug use restriction laws. I have attached a pdf from Dennis Miller’s “Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Drugs and Society” that begins the conversation in regards to the topic. Read the excerpt.

Your task for paper 1 is to research the topic more. Read more sources on the topic (official websites are allowed {e.g., NIH, gov, etc), but not personal blogs. Instead of making the argument for what you already believe (prior to writing the paper), your job in paper 1 will be to present the best rationale for the counter argument.

Paper 1 Requirements

3 pages of writing (double spaced, standard font, standard margins; not including any title pages and reference page)

In about 1 page, present the debate topic, as well as your particular perspective you have/had prior to the additional research.

For the next 2 pages, present the best rationale for the counter argument. This is where you will be heavily citing the research in the area.

For your last paragraph (about), discuss what is convincing or unconvincing about the evidence you have presented prior.

At least 5 references, utilizing APA formatting (APA 6 or APA 7 is fine).
