Maternal Health and Mortality: Florida

In my practice, I intend to work in the state of Florida. Fortunately, the state has its own review mechanism which is completed via the Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review (PAMR). In the state, there are policies for mapping the high-risk pregnant mothers with guaranteed access to drugs and other emergency services. Abortion is only extended to pregnant mothers with an underlying medical condition necessitating it. Also, these services depend on the possession of federal and state-backed health cover. This means that access to emergency services is necessitated by the availability of such services.

According to the available data, pregnancy-related deaths in Florida in the postpartum period average 182 deaths per year before discharge and 57 per year after discharge. Non-Hispanic black women, those who had a cesarean delivery, and those who are either overweight or underweight are at a higher risk. According to the available data, Florida ranks 27th nationally on the basis of adequate access to health insurance. Interestingly, the state is also ranked 29th in infant mortality (6.2). Similarly, Florida is ranked 32nd nationally in maternal mortality (24.1). From the relationship, it is evident that the state’s policy on maternal health as well as the accompanying provision of and disbursement for such policies have an effect on infant and maternal health. It would be imperative for the state to strengthen its insurance coverage policy as well as making specific measures which would be aimed at helping the most vulnerable population groups.
