Question Description

  • The object’s history (how you came to own it/who gave it to you)
  • Where you keep the object
  • When and how you use the object
  • What, if anything, does the object communicate about who you are as a person and what you care you about
  • The object’s market value, if known (what it cost when you or someone else bought it and what, if anything, you could charge if you were to sell it)
  • What other kinds of value (social, familial, historical, sentimental, etc.) it holds for you and why
  • How an outsider might respond to the object. Would they think that it is valuable? Why or why not?
  • Will the object always have the same value, or can its value change over time?
  • What might an ethnographer learn about you through the object?
  • Would the ethnographer have a different interpretation if they saw it in use vs. saw it sitting in a display case?

The paper should be typed in Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins. It should be double-spaced. No separate works cited page is necessary if you use parenthetical citations, i.e., (Malinowski 1922: 27), but feel free to include one if you want. To receive full credit, the papers should be polished with minimal spelling, formatting, or grammatical errors.
