Subject Matter:

Based on the class readings, lectures, and discussions, analyze the composition of the attached real world

sample. A composition is the whole spatial property and structure of a design.

Consider the purposes of composition:

Target audience

Visual interest

Clarity of visual communication

Organization of graphic space

Visual articulation of a design concept

Visual expression and communication

Composition is the form, the whole spatial property and structure resulting from the visualization and

arrangement of graphic elements—type and images—in relation to one another and to the format. Note

that designers compose with the intention to visually communicate, to be compelling, and to be

expressive.

Requirements/specifications:

Review the sample above and discuss in a 2 page typed analysis the following:

o Is it an effective visual communication piece?

o What makes it an effective visual communication piece? (10 points each)

Discuss:

1. The message and meaning include the audience (if you can)

2. The use of Design Principles in the piece

3. What Design Elements were used and how

4. Explain how Gestalt theory is applied

5. The form and spatial decisions the design used in the project

6. Analyze the compositional flow

7. How is the piece a cohesive visual experience?

2. Suggestion: use formal terms: Design Principles (emphasis, unity, balance

(symmetrical/asymmetrical), movement/rhythm), Design Elements (7 elements), dots, lines, planes,

geometric and organic forms, pattern, texture, figure/ground, positive/negative interplay, illusory

depth, foreground/middle ground/background elements, compositional structure, scale, contrast,

proportional spatial breaks, Gestalt terms, hierarchy, compositional flow, etc.
