Discussion Question

Each organization has a governing body that is responsible for developing policies, establishing services, planning and initiating development, and ensuring accountability to the community the organization provides services to.

1) Define the difference between the board governance in nonprofit, for profit organization, and public organization. Generally, what are the roles of the board of directors? List 4 of the major roles.

2) Briefly describe the six dimensions of board competencies identified as essential to effective governance as summarized by Jackson & Holland (1998).

3) Rearrange these 6 board competencies in order of importance in your view and provide a brief justification of why you prioritize them in that order.
