Question Description

Essays should be about 5 pages in length (Times New Roman font, 12pt, double-spaced, ASA formatting). You can find more information about citing in ASA format in the Week 2 lecture and here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/a… (check out both the References Page Formatting and In-Text Citations). Essays should demonstrate mastery of the concepts from the unit materials (Weeks 1-4). Citations other than the textbook are heavily encouraged but not required. In your essay, you may choose from the following prompts:
- Apply at least three concepts from this units reading to a piece of media (news, music, visual art, television show, movie, etc.). Outline how the media relates to the concepts (at least 3) we have learned.
- Design a study of a sociological research question related to this units materials. Explain the purpose of your hypothetical study, how you would go about collecting and analyzing data, and the ethics of conducting this research. Integrate at least 3 concepts from this units reading to your study design.
- Find a recent news article (written within the last 6 months) and apply three course concepts to analyze it.
I will grade your essays using the following rubrics:
Prompt 1 Rubric (Media Application):

| Thesis Statement | You will need to include a thesis statement that describes in 1-2 sentences how the concepts you have chosen apply to your chosen piece of media. This is an argument-style statement. | 1 point |
| Description of Media | You should provide details on the media you chose–summarize the film, describe the art piece, etc. | 1 point |
| Definition of the Concepts | You must provide definitions of the concepts you chose in your own words. | 2 points |
| Application to Media | You should describe in detail, using examples from the media piece, how the concepts you chose apply to this media. This section should take up the most space in your essay. | 5 points |
| Conclusion | You should include a section that summarizes your essay. | 1 point |
| Formatting | You should include a title, page numbers, use 12 pt Times New Roman font, double-space your paper, and use ASA formatting for in-text citations and a Reference page. | 2 points |
Prompt 2 Rubric (Study Design):
